” .. ..  arrested again on January 15, 2012, and has been inside Ward 209 of Evin Prison ever since without having been informed of his new charges.
“Since then, nobody has seen him inside the General Ward nor in any of the public rooms of Ward 209. This means that he has been kept inside a solitary cell since his arrest and nobody knows about his health or whether he is alive. In all the past 1.5 years, he has only had two visits with his grandfather. Nobody has any information about him,” .

What is his current condition, and why is he– unlike other prisoners of conscience– not held in the public ward? Why is he [reportedly] held in Ward/Section 209 (I.e. the security ward) of Evin Prison? These are the questions that Arash’s lawyer and family have no answers to, despite making numerous inquiries. Arash’s father, Hossein Sadeghi, and his lawyer, Alizadeh Tabatabaie, have denied the rumors of Arash’s death to Rooz, but stated that their efforts to inquire about his condition and status  have proven unsuccessful. … continue reading here

A Chronicle Of Atrocities Inflicted Upon Student Activist Arash Sadeghi

Student activist Arash Sadeghi, born on September 29, 1986, a member of Mir Hossein Mousavi’s 2009 presidential campaign and a member of Allameh University Students› Islamic Association, was a philosophy student when expelled from Allameh University.

Following is but a sliver of the unimaginable, painful life of this student activist as chronicled by «Nameh Beh Yek Azadeh» blog:

Tir 1388 (June 22 – July 22, 2009
His first arrest was after the 2009 presidential election on July 8, 2009. After fifty days under torture in solitary confinement, which he may give a full account of later himself, he was released alongside a less traveled road in Tehran.

In describing the horrific tortures that Arash suffered, pointing to only one of them might just be enough: He was forced to lick a toilet bowl.

Day 1388 (December 22, 2009 – January 20, 2010)
Following the bloody events of Ashura protests in December of 2009, Arash was once again arrested on December 27, 2009. He was later released on bail March 6, 2010.

While out on furlough, in conversation with relatives, he spoke of the «severe beatings in prison, and severely damaged right shoulder as a result of the beatings».

At that time, he had been sentenced by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court to three years in prison.

Farvardin 1389 (March 20 – April 20, 2010)
In March 2010, after the expiration of his furlough period, Arash returned to prison and, for long time after that, was banned from visits and phone calls.

According to his family, the reasons for him not being allowed visits and phone calls were, publication of the news of his conviction and sentence to three years imprisonment, plus, published accounts of his being physically assaulted during his previous incarceration.

At that time, his family voiced concern and worry for his well-being in light of not being able to see him or phone him.

Aban 1389 (October 23 – November 21, 2010)
After one year of incarceration and torture, Arash was released on furlough. But, after only a few days, with no advance notice of his furlough being revoked, nor any phone calls from the Judiciary ordering him back to prison, agents raided Arash’s home at 4:00 AM on October 26 to arrested him. He wasn’t home.

The trauma of this raid resulted in Arash’s mother suffering a heart attack, from which she died few days later.

Four days after the raid, Arash’s mother, Farahnaz Dargahi died in the hospital on October 30, 2010. She was buried in Beheshte Zahra cemetery in lot 311, row 119, grave number 23.

On November 15, 2010, prior to his arrest, Arash, criticizing the raid on their home, told BBC Persian, «Each time I received a summons from the Magistrate at Evin prison, I went there. I don’t know why they carried out such action this time.»

Arash, who was suffering from the pressure of the sudden sad and sorrowful death of his mother, told BBC in the same interview, «I have paid a high price. I would rather go to prison! For me, conditions inside the prison are better than out! The pressure from my family that blames me for the death of my mother is a lot of stress to endure.»

Arash Sadeghi was sentenced by Branches 28 and 26 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court to three and six years in prison, respectively.

The Court of Appeals overturned the 3 year sentence and exonerated him of all charges in that case. The six year sentence was also overturned by the Appeals Court and was changed to 1 year in prison and four years suspended sentence.

Azar 1389 (November 22 – December 21, 2010)
After Arash issued a statement December 7 on the occasion of Students› Day, he was physically assaulted and beaten by the interrogators at Ward 209 of Evin prison and, once again, he sustained injuries in his shoulder and ribs.

The interrogators refused to allow him to be treated at Evin’s clinic. As a result of this and to protest their action, Arash launched a hunger strike on December 10, 2010.

In a note that he sent out from Ward 209 in Evin prison on the occasion of Students› Day, Arash wrote, «If we say that we do not recognize this illegitimate, illegal government that came into power based on lies, slander and cheating, and if we call for a healthy and fair election, monitored by observers and the real people; we are considered Moharebs (enmity against God) and anti-revolutionary.»

Day 1389 (December 2010 – January 2011)
After fourteen days on hunger strike, Arash ended his hunger strike on December 24, 2010 and was transferred to the General Ward 350 in Evin prison.

But on December 31, 2010, he was suddenly transferred back to the high security Ward 209 solitary confinement, where he was once again beaten severely by the Intelligence Ministry’s agents. Four days later he was returned to Ward 350, severely injured and bruised. At this point he could not move his right arm, could barely walk and also suffered from stomach bleeding and had a lung infection.

Esfand 1389 (February 20 – March 20, 2011)
Just as in the past, Arash was under pressure and torture by the interrogators based on false and trumped up charges.

This time, the interrogators were pressuring him to deny that death of his mother was due to the trauma and shock of her home being raided, and also to deny his press interviews from last November.

To protest all the pressures and tortures he was under, Arash once again launched a hunger strike on March 14. Due to his poor health as a result of all the tortures he had suffered, and the stress of being on hunger strike, Arash’s health became dire and he suffered from body trembles and loss of consciousness. As a result, Evin officials transferred him to Evin clinic.

Farvardin 1390 (March 21 – April 20, 2011)
Arash spent the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) in pain and poor health in Ward 209 solitary confinement.

Khordad 1390 (May 22 – June 21, 2011)
After the martyrdom of Hale Sahabi, National-Religious activists Hoda Saber and Amir Khosro Dalirsani launched a hunger strike. Arash along with other political prisoners, Mehdi Khodaei, Ahmad Shahrezaei, Payman Aref, Shahin Zainali and Javad Alikhani started a hunger strike on June 5 to protest the death of Hale Sahabi.

Arash, along with Khodaei and Shahrezaei had originally intended to end their hunger strike on June 12, but after the martyrdom of Hoda Saber on hunger strike, the trio decided to remain on their hunger strike to protest the violent death of Hoda Saber.

Azar 1390 (November 22 – December 20, 2011)
Arash, who had been sentenced to one year in prison and four years suspended sentence, was finally released from Ward 350 of Evin prison on December 14 after spending more than 22 months, most of which were under pressure and torture in solitary confinement in the high security ward of Evin prison.

At time of his release, Arash was on hunger strike in solidarity with the political prisoners who were in need of medical care that was not being provided.

He was released from prison, after he had lost his mother and his family had been torn apart, their lives shattered.

Day 1390 (December 2011 – January 2012)
Before long, Arash is once again arrested by security agents on the morning of  January 15, 2011 while visiting his mother’s grave site with his grandparents.

This violent arrest included insults and assaults which resulted in Arash suffering a skull fracture.

Khordad 1391 (May 21 – June 20, 2012)
To date, since his last arrest on January 15, 2011, Arash has been incarcerated in Ward 209 solitary confinement. Other than one very short phone conversation few days after his arrest, which was monitored by security guards and a five minutes visit with his grandfather on May 24, Arash has had no contact with his family since this latest arrest.

During the last visit with his grandfather, Aresh said that he had been interrogated every 3 weeks, and also announced that in solidarity and in support for Hossein Ronaghi Maleki he will launch a hunger strike.

Allameh Tabatabai university student activist, Arash Sadeghi, was first arrested July 09, 2009, during the suppression of the post-presidential election protests. He was released after 50 days in solitary confinement.

Sadeghi was re-arrested on December 09, 2009 after the mass protests of Ashura, and was later released on March 6, 2010.

Arash was again arrested January 15, 2012, while visiting the grave site of his mother with his grandparents. Arash’s mother suffered a heart attack due to the stress and shock of her home being raided by the security forces who were trying to re-arrest Arash.

Arash’s father, a war veteran, had only spoken to the media (Guardian) once after the death of his wife, this is the first time that he has given an interview to a domestic media.

Following is translation of an interview conducted by Kalameh with Arash’s father Hossein Sadeghi:

21 September 2012

– biography –

Arash Sadeghi (born on September 28th 1986) as a graduate student of Philosophy in AllameTabatabai University joined Islamic Association of Students since his entrance in university and based on his previous activities , became one of most reputable and active members of Islamic Association of Allame Tabatabai University.
Arash was arrested for the first time in his own house on 08/07/2009 by security forces, with no court order and was released after 45 days without any news from him, while hehas suffered from following physical and psychological tortures:
-Successive slaps for 2 or 3 hours, so that his optic nerve and eardrum was damaged seriously.
-Having no permission for bath or cleaning himself.
-Several baton blows on his neck so that his cervical vertebrae has injured seriously.
His interrogators wanted him to confess to have relation with People’sMujahedin of Iran(MEK) and He was under intense pressure to make a televised confession. Above mentioned tortures are results of his refusal to accept their demands. So he was held for 110 days in solitary confinement and finally he was abandoned around Tehran while he was unconscious.
For second time, he was arrested on 26/12/2009 and released on March 2010 on 480,000 USD bail, but he has experienced 2 short time arrestmentson April 2010 .
On November,2010,s ecurity forces came to their house in the early morning hours( 4:00am) on October 2010 without court or legal order. When they broke the windows and entered the house, his mother suffered a heart attack and passed away after spending four days in the hospital.
While Iranian Legal Medicine Organization affirmed that the shock was her death cause, there is no reclamation for his family yet.
After this incident, Arash, suffering from depression, in an interview withRooz Online News Agency declared:” I ask God that my sentence be finalizedso that I can be arrested as soon as possible. My father, my sister, and my entire family hold me responsible for my mother’s death” and he was back in jail by a written summon.

“Arash first trial court held in April 2010 by Branches 28, the result was three years imprisonment for Arash.
In same year, the Court of second case was held in branch 26 .
First the Judge issued 6 years Sentence.
Sentence of three years from the firsttrial Was reduced to 18 months in Court of Appeals and sentence of six Years from the second trial Was reduced to 5 years.
Arash Sadeghi’s attorney had objected , because the both court did the same charges on the similar case.
the outcome of the protest means sending the case to another district court wich reduced to four years the first conviction. the 4-year sentence isnot final and is still in the appeal process. the sentence of the court number 28 of Moghiseh was reduced to 18 months in the appeal court. Andthe sentence of the 4 years of Arash isin the process of the appeal currently.”
After his statement for 16 Azar (December 7th, Student Day) from prison, he was transferred to solitary confinement of 209 ward, which belongs to Information Ministry and he was beaten so severely that his shoulder was dislocated twice and hislegs lost their power.
This student activist went on a hunger strike to protest these tortures and so was transferred to general ward, while regarding these tortures he was unable to stand on his own legs. His shoulder was seriously damaged and hunger strike caused him stomach bleeding and lung infection. Prison conditions and pressures caused him serious depression and mental illness and he had never any medical treatments.
After spending 1 year of his sentence in prison, he was released on Wednesday, decem ber14,2011 , but 30 days later, he was arrested by plain clothes security forces, while going to Tehran’s cemetery(Behesh t Zahra) with his grandfather, with so much beating.
Arash is until in an unreasonable detention in solitary confinement, in 209 ward of Evin prison.

Following these incidents, Arash’s grandfather wrote a letter to his interrogator and stated that:” Arash lived on the streets for 24 hours after his release, hen some of his friends came to me and wanted me to provide him a place for living, and despite all pressures from family to reject Arash, I accepted him.
You know why? because he had no place to live!”
He also said in his letter :”I think withmyself when these tragic events will end? Is there any end for this tragedy? I leave you alone with your conscience, but actually I doubt that you and your colleagues have any conscience!”
However after writing this letter and after meeting Arash in prison, his grandfather, Shirallah Dargahi, was arrested and transferred to Evin Prison and informing Arash from Hossein Ronaghi Maleki’s situation was stated as the cause of his arrestment. This information led to Arash’s hunger strike.
6 days later Arash’s Grandfather was released on 10000 USD bail and Arash has ended his hunger strike , but nobody knows the reason and duration of his arrestment yet

Hossein - Arash

Hossein Ronaghi Maleki’s letter to Arash Sadeghi; Your resistance and camaraderie have been proven to me-end your hunger strike

Kaleme – May 30, 2012

Seyed Hossein Ronaghi Maleki, imprisoned blogger who launched a hunger strike on May 26, 2012 in protest of his mistreatment and interference by the IRGC and the Intelligence Agency in his case, preventing the upholding of the law and legal procedures, blocking judicial independence, impeding the rights of political prisoners and their families, wrote a letter to his friend imprisoned student Arash Sadeghi, who is being held behind bars in Ward 209 of Evin prison.

According to Kalame, imprisoned student activist Arash Sadeghi launched a hunger strike several days ago in support of his friend Hossein Ronaghi Maleki. Arash Sadeghi was able to visit briefly with his grandfather after 4 months of no visitations while being held in solitary confinement. Arash revealed that during this time, he was interrogated every 3 weeks.

Arash Sadeghi, a student activist from Allameh Tabatabai University was first arrested after the contested presidential elections of 09, on July 9th, and released after enduring 50 days in solitary confinement. He was arrested again on December 09 following the Ashura protests and released on March 6, 2010.

Branches 28 and 26 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court sentenced Arash Sadeghi to 3 and 6 years respectively. The appellate court reduced the total to one year behind bars plus a 4 year suspended sentence. This student was released after enduring 18 months behind bars even though the court had issued him a one-year sentence.

Last winter while he was visiting the grave of his mother with his grandfather and grandmother, Arash was again arrested. His mother had passed away at her home due to the shock and stress inflicted by security agents.

Following is the text of the letter from Hossein to Arash, as obtained by Kaleme.

Oh breeze, I cannot go to my beloved’s house

You will go there, go safely and send my regards

[by the poet Saeedi]

Dear Arash,

The moment my mother and father told me you have launched a hunger strike in support of your friend I felt both joy and sorrow! I was happy to see you so steadfast and strong by my side. I was sad to know that despite your own dire physical condition, you have launched a hunger strike. You know well that I can never forget your strength, your patience, your talent, your honesty and your gentle soul.

My dear brother!

I know what they did to you after you were arrested on July 9, 2009 by the IRGC and transferred to Eshrat Abad. I know the severe torture you were put under. I know you were arrested again after Ashoura ’88 [Dec ‘09]. I know how the evil ones tormented you and tortured you. Your wounded bruised body and your blackened eyes were the outcome of this Karbala event. I know that today you are standing tall in the solitary confinement of the unjust abusers, and you are enduring great torture and hardship. But you are never humiliated, you hold your head high, and you do not give in to tyranny, so everyone can learn true freedom and resistance from you. I cannot imagine the pain of loosing a mother due to the onslaught of the puppet dictatorship, but you know this suffering too well and you have felt the deep anguish.

My steady comrade!

We live in times when the worth of human beings is completely gone and has been replaced by unjust deeds. These are times when tyrants are attacking freedom fighters and their principles. We must get rid of this darkness with our patience, our stability, and our resistance so that we can shine a light and replace oppression with justice. You know that even before this act of brotherhood, I have well known your steadfast deliverance and integrity.

For this reason I am asking you to put an end to your hunger strike.

This is the request of your friend and your comrade. I hope that you will reach this conclusion, my brother. I hope these dark tormentors know that “sometimes a force can burn a life, and sometimes a sigh can break the tyrant’s back.”

[by the poet Rahim Moeni Kermanshahi].
